Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of play.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from around eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off victory against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Drama

Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.

Playoff Decider

This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
