‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to success with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe initial occasion the Spanish forward featured in English soil, an teenage playing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he scored. During his subsequent match he appeared in the country, against the Black Cats two months later, he scored. Another occasion, against the Citizens not long later, well, he did it once more. As he revisited to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” So Athletic did their duty: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the forward admits, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Man United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea how true it was, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, Bilbao, the morning session is set to begin; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and a further journey to England, this time to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. This is proving a tough year for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of being here. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.
The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to experience the peak of the club’s history.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the first team but each step you progress through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in six games between his debut and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A massive setback but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it helps. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then head home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone in your position, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. All the more so after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
