Ayoub El Kaabi's Breathtaking Strike Wraps Up Morocco's Triumph Against the Coelacanths in Africa Cup of Nations First Game.

Host nation Morocco overcame a anxious beginning to overcome their island opponents in the competition's first match on Sunday, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi in the latter period.

It was a far from convincing display, though, from the heavily tipped hosts, who are ranked 97 places above the small Indian Ocean nation in the FIFA rankings and had to toil hard for the three points in wet conditions at Rabat's national stadium.

Tense Beginning and Missed Opportunities

Morocco missed an first-half penalty and were goalless at half-time even with controlling possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

The goal arrived after full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to keep the ball in play before laying it across for Díaz to sidefoot home.

Every first match is never easy but we delivered in the second period,” commented Morocco coach Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Magic

The tension was subsequently eased by a moment of pure individual brilliance from substitute El Kaabi. Just 10 minutes after coming on, the forward met a cross with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and sealing the win.

Before that, the hosts could have been ahead in the 11th minute after a penalty was given for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi effort was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Late Opportunity

The underdogs comfortably held their more illustrious opponents at bay until the hosts' greater quality in the end told.

Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor made a number of other good stops to limit the scoreline as the match progressed, although his team created a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following the first goal, with Rafiki Saïd shooting directly into Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.

Injury Concern for Morocco

The victory was partially marred by an injury to the skipper, Romain Saïss, who limped off after the first half in tears.

The centre-back had just returned to the international setup last month after a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.

This result continues the team's historic run of consecutive victories to 19, surpassing the old best of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
