Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the images were from was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
