Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
