Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
