New York's next mayor affirms his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his victory in November.
"This decision was based on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy β halting rent increases β to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he is from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
