Edwards and O'Neil represent the early candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the team's ten-game without a victory start to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous links to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton manager - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they start the process of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
