As he approaches his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is inextricably linked to achieving success.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach took over on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. Yet, that early success is still his sole significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Yes,” the manager said when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things must occur in the near future as well to earn the right.”

This weekend sees the landmark with a match versus Everton, the identical team Arsenal met just after his hiring was confirmed.

Present Challenges

With second-placed Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League for the first time. This comes despite Arteta managing a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

Arteta is tied down by 18 months remaining on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver promptly.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, emphasizing the ongoing need to justify his role. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, expressing gratitude for the strong backing from the club's ownership, while singling out the squad's dedication as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The team faces the weekend fixture dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is likely to see him miss action for a few weeks.

A Different Club

Regardless of the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta is confident the club's “priorities and messaging” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
