Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories built from the memories of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the case could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day as a different person. As a youth, he fights the control of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
