The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
