The Reform UK leader Claims Teachers of ‘Poisoning Our Kids’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that teachers would go on strike within weeks a Reform UK election victory, accusing them of “harming young minds” by telling students that African-Caribbean youth are oppressed and Caucasian students are perpetrators.
During an event for a private US Christian college, the politician expressed his perspective on British schools, claiming that the “radical left-wing” had “now in control of our education system”.
“I expect a walkout by educators soon after winning the next general election,” he remarked in response to questions.
“They are corrupting young minds. They instruct children to be ashamed of their country. They are telling little Johnny, who’s eight, who is black that he is a victim and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is an oppressor. They are dividing us, not uniting us. They promote this harmful mindset.”
In response to Farage’s claims, the head of a major education union rejected the notion that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “nonsense”. He pointed out that any strikes must relate to educators’ working conditions, and questioned whether Reform would attack these immediately upon entering government.
“Farage has built his public life on dog-whistle politics and now, like Trump, he is lining up teachers and their unions for a conflict,” Kebede stated.
“I think that’s grossly irresponsible. I don’t – and nor does my union – advocate such divisive theories as he’s suggesting … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, particularly schooling … and he would be a disaster for students and learning.”
Reform, which tops surveys by about 10 points, has provided limited specifics on its educational plans and does not appear to have designated an education lead.
Nonetheless, his comments indicated the party would overhaul the educational framework. He said: “We face an enormous task with schooling – truly monumental. And, it won’t happen quickly; it requires years, years to turn this around.”
Farage expressed that gen Z was more open to analytical thought, but older youth were “completely lost”.
Honoring Charlie Kirk, Farage said: “All I want education to do to teach critical thinking – to instruct people that multiple perspectives exist and you make up your own mind rather than current practices where views are labeled good or bad. It’s a massive job in the UK and US.”
The party has conflicted with a major educators’ organization, after Kebede called the party “far right and racist” and dismissed Farage as “a cheap imitation”.
The politician has charged Kebede of being “an avowed radical” … someone who is absolutely determined that our children should be poisoned through education, their thinking tainted about everything to do with this country” and has argued that the union is trying to indoctrinate teenagers against Reform.
Almost one million people are employed in education in the UK, about half of whom are teachers and the others teaching assistants and support staff. The leading teachers’ organization has about 450,000 members.
National strikes over educators’ salaries and work environment in 2023 caused widespread disruption in educational institutions and extensive missed instruction for students.
At the US event, the Reform leader also pledged to help spread the digital courses of the Christian college in the UK. He stated such groups were “part of the fightback”, adding that: “I am serious. I’ll assist attract vast numbers of young people to your online courses. I make that commitment tonight and I’ll do that.”
The college, a religious educational establishment, provides complimentary classes. Its website states: “A scientific, literary, theological, political, and moral education is necessary for personal happiness and to perpetuate the blessings of freedom. The college furnishes these beautiful courses for free to all who wish to learn.”
