Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
