While Swimmers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Image Shows Rescuer Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many neighbors, detected loud noises reverberating across the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her home, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, talking to a pair who had rushed up the incline soaked, she noticed someone coming up from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He moved at something that surely every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle running.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of valour in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for dozens of the injured.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the site of the attack transforming into a makeshift medical station. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the water to assist people needing help.

In the days after the attack, statements of appreciation were shared. A social media message shared appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The team of rescuers later shared a communication, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your kind sentiments and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our responders,” the group wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time lifeguards, said that the team performed exceptionally from the instant the incident began until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a local official.

“The team show altruism every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores secure for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we focus on just how much light we have seen in the face of such evil.”
