Who's Out in Front in the Race for the Golden Boot Award?
The contest for the European Golden Shoe is intensifying as the 2025-26 season approaches its mid-season juncture.
With a new winner in every one of the previous three campaigns, the honor remains wide open. Manchester City star Erling Haaland was the most recent Premier League-based player to secure the award back in 2022-23.
The prodigious Norwegian goal-scorer is back in the hunt this campaign, but encounters tough competition from German Bundesliga forward Harry Kane and Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe. With many fixtures left to play, other players still have an opportunity to throw their hat into the fray.
Understanding the European Golden Shoe Award?
The European Golden Shoe was first launched in the 1967-68 by the France-based newspaper L'Equipe to recognize the highest goalscorer in domestic league matches from a European top division league.
Since the 1997-98, the award has been overseen by European Sports Media, which implemented a weighted scoring system. Under this method, a player's tallies are multiplied by a designated coefficient based on the UEFA coefficient of their league.
Goals scored in Europe's five major leagues—the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, and French Ligue 1—are valued at two points apiece.
For leagues ranked sixth to 22nd in UEFA's rankings, such as the Portuguese league, goals are worth one and a half points. Goals in all other European leagues carry one point.
While the award has been shared on several occasions in the past, a rule change from the 2019-20 dictates that in the event of a points tie, the award goes to the player with the fewest minutes played.
If the deadlock remains, the subsequent tiebreaker is the total of assists, followed by the least goals from the penalty spot. Only if these tiebreakers are exhausted would the prize be shared.
Who are the Leading Contenders?
Currently, a three-horse tussle is underway for the current season's Golden Shoe, with the three most recent winners split by just a single goal.
- Harry Kane (English captain) leads with 19 goals (38 points) from 15 Bundesliga fixtures.
- Erling Haaland also has 19 goals (38 points) from 17 Premier League appearances.
- Kylian Mbappe sits one back on 18 goals (36 points) in 18 La Liga matches.
In fourth place is RFS striker Darko Lemajic of Latvia's club RFS, who has netted 28 goals (28 points) across the club's 36 league games in 2025.
Feyenoord striker Ayase Ueda is tied for fifth with 18 goals (27 points) from 17 Eredivisie fixtures this term.
The remainder of the top 10 is made up of players from leagues that function on a January-to-December schedule.
